A QoS support framework for dynamically reconfigurable multimedia applications

چکیده
The use of multimedia in distributed systems has begun to include such complex and mission-critical domains as digital television production, ‘video-ondemand’ services, medical and security systems. These applications impose more stringent requirements on the support mechanisms provided by underlying networks and operating systems than most currently deployed continuous media applications. This paper describes the DJINN multimedia programming framework, which is designed to support the construction and dynamic reconfiguration of distributed multimedia applications. We motivate the benefits of a runtime model of the quality of service and other characteristics of multimedia applications, and demonstrate a generic algorithm for scheduling dynamic reconfigurations that maintains QoS guarantees. QoS characteristics are modelled as piecewise-linear or quadratic relations, which are solved using standard constraint programming techniques. During reconfigurations, updates to active components are scheduled so as to maintain temporal constraints on the media streams. We illustrate our approach using experimental results from a real-world

متن کاملQuality of Perception to Quality of Service Mapping Using a Dynamically Reconfigurable Communication System
We present an innovative approach for providing en-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees in a distributed multimedia setting. Quality of Perception (QoP) is a term which encompasses not only a user’s satisfaction with the quality of multimedia presentations, but also his/her ability to analyse, synthesise and assimilate the informational content of multimedia displays. The basics of a mapp...
متن کاملDistributed QoS Compilation and Runtime Instantiation
The rapid growth and coexistence of different application domains, such as multimedia and electronic commerce, present a significant challenge to the provision of their Quality of Service (QoS). To solve this challenge, we need a unified QoS framework, which allows flexibility and reconfigurability. In this paper, we present a reconfigurable component-based QoS framework, called 2KQ, which solv...
متن کاملFlexible and Extensible Qos-management for Adaptive Middleware
The task of middleware is to mask out problems of heterogeneity and distribution for application developers. With the emergence of new application domains, like multimedia and real-time applications, flexible support of QoS and real-time requirements becomes a major challenge. Reconfigurable bindings and policy driven binding protocols are the major means in the MULTE framework to support these...
متن کاملPLASMA: A Component-based Framework for Building Self-Adaptive Multimedia Applications
With the proliferation of networked devices, today’s multimedia applications operate, as never before, in heterogeneous and dynamic environments. An attractive way to deal with this situation is to make applications self-adaptive (or self-reconfigurable); that is, make them able to observe them-selves and their environment, to detect significant changes and to reconfigure their own behavior in ...
